Five Element Acupuncture
Five element acupuncture works on the philosophical idea that there are five elements in constant flux and harmony. Illness is when the balance between these elements is disturbed possibly causing an excess of one or a deficiency of another. The task for the acupuncturist is to then find out how the balance has been upset and the best way to help the person regain it, and therefore remedy any problems caused by the upset.
There are many tools at an acupuncturists disposal for identifying the cause of imbalance
- Taking the left and right radial pulse
- Tongue diagnosis
- Abdominal and meridian palpitation
- Smell
- Discussion
Once a diagnosis has been reached the acupuncturist will select some points and begin treatment.
Moxibustion
Is the burning of the herb moxa. It is used alongside needles to help to balance a persons energetics. There are a few ways in which moxa can be used
- Moxa Stick. This is a cigar like roll of moxa that is held above the skin to create a sense of warmth in the desired area/point.
- Needle Moxa. This is when a small cone or ball of moxa is applied to the end of the needle to gently add warmth to the point of insertion.
- Direct Moxa. This is when a small cone is placed directly on the skin. This brings a lot of warmth to the area.
Stems and Branches
Stems and Branches is an ancient system of diagnosis used by acupuncturists. It’s written origins can be traced to the Ling Shu. It is based around astrology and can be used to give the acupuncturist an insight into constitutional imbalances that might cause problems for people. It can also help to guide an acupuncturist in how they might treat certain conditions.
